Trapped in the lines of a crab pot, bleeding, gasping for air, her tail already destroyed by her struggles and lack of circulation to it. She was rescued and transported to Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Sawyer Nelson (Nathan Gamble), the 11-year old boy befriends her. Despite the hostile behavior of Winter, they are doubtful about her surviving with lacking tails. Sawyer along with Dr. Clay Haskett (Harry Connick Jr.) who rescued the struggling mammal, Sawyer's mother Lorraine Nelson (Ashley Judd) and among the other caretakers, Dr. McCarthy ( Morgan Freeman) designed a prosthetic tail for Winter to restore her ability to swim. Winter had to learn how to swim with the use her new tail, however, with friend sawyer and team of experts, she eventually swims and plays with another dolphin, rolling and diving and surfacing to demand belly rubs and fish from her caretakers without difficulty.
